Can I have a barbeque, hangi or campfire?

YES

Fires for cooking (e.g., barbecues) and warmth (e.g., campfires) may be lit during the non – fire danger period without a permit provided that:

 

  • Adequate precautions are taken to prevent the spread of fire.
  • There are no Local Government restrictions applicable to your area.
  • The fire is lit in a properly prepared fireplace, that prevents the escape of fire and burning material
  • A person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight.

YES

But only if:

  • The fire is lit in a properly prepared fireplace, that prevents the escape of fire and burning material.
  • The ground and air space is clear of flammable material
  • The fire and fuel used are the minimum necessary for the purpose and do not occupy an area of more than 1 sq metre
  • A person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight.

Note that QFRS considers, a “properly prepared fireplace” to be:

  • a fireplace that is constructed of stone, metal, concrete or any other non-flammable material so as to contain the perimeter of the fire, or;
  • a campfire constructed to be capable of containing burning material in a trench or barrier of rocks.

A commercially produced barbecue would be considered a properly constructed fireplace.

NO

The lighting of fires for any purpose is banned during any declared fire ban or state of fire emergency.

The Commissioner Queensland Fire and Rescue Service may allow the use of some types of barbecues during a fire ban or state of fire emergency. Check the fire service website www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au for details during any ban period.

Can I have a small fire to burn garden litter and small piles of vegetation?

Fires may be lit to dispose of vegetation without a permit, provided that:

  • There are no Local Government restrictions applicable to your area.
  • The fire is less than two metres wide, 2 metres long and two metres high.
  • A person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight.

Check with your local council before lighting any fires.

  • There are no Local Government restrictions applicable to your area.
  • The permit to light fire conditions are followed.
  • A person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight

Can I light a fire in the open air for burning off grass, stubble, weeds, undergrowth or other vegetation?

  • There are no Local Government restrictions applicable to your area.
  • The permit to light fire conditions are followed.
  • A person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight.

Are there any exemptions from the requirement to have a Permit to Light Fire?

  • Canegrowers have certain exemptions from the requirement to obtain a permit. For more information contact your QFRS Rural Operations Area Office.
  • Fires lit for the purpose of burning the carcass of a beast do not require a permit.
  • Fires lit to dispose of sawmill waste do not require a permit.
  • Fires for cooking and warmth do not require a permit (see top of page).

In all cases the use of fire must be done in a responsible manner. All fires must be attended to at all times the fire is alight.

Local Governments may have rules or by laws prohibiting the lighting of fires. Check with your local council before lighting any fires.
