Absentee Landowners

Prior to making application for a "Permit to Light Fire" you must make every effort to inform all neighbours (ie owners/occupiers of adjoining land) of your intention to apply for a permit.

Fire Wardens are required to refuse to issue a permit unless satisfied that reasonable steps have been taken to notify every adjoining landowner of your intention to apply for a permit.  At times it can be difficult to notify absentee landowners particularly when they don’t show any active interest in their land.

The applicant can ask the local fire warden and the local brigade if they have contact details for the absentee landowner or alternatively they can contact the local council for their assistance.  If telephone contact numbers are not available a letter can be written to the absentee landowner advising of the intention to apply for a “Permit to Light Fire”.  The letter should also contain contact numbers for the applicant and the relevant fire warden and indicate when the applicant intends to burn.

Reasonable time should be afforded to the adjoining absentee landowner to object to the issue of a permit.
