If caught in a fire, driving
| + | Park the car on cleared ground where there are no low shrubs or long grass. Do not leave the vehicle and try to escape on foot. | |
| + | Do not attempt to drive through heavy smoke | |
| + | Wind up the windows and shelter below the window level. | |
| + | Switch on the headlights so that other vehicles can see your car. | |
| + | Switch off fans and air-conditioning to keep smoke out. | |
| + | Lie down onthe floor and cover your body with woollen blanket, floor mats, spare clothing or whatever is available. It will get very hot inside the car, but if you are under the blanket you will be protected from radiant heat. Once the main fire front has passed, you can leave and move onto the burnt out area. | |
| + | Remember to drink plenty of water and eat juicy fruit to stop yourself from dehydrating. | |
| + | If you go into bushland during fire risk periods, dress sensibly. Synthetic clothing melts easily; cotton or woollen clothing offer maximum protection agains radiant heat. |
