Before the Bushfire Season - Prevent/Prepare

 >   Connect hoses to taps, block downpipes with tennis balls wrapped in rags and fill the gutters with water.
 >   Shelter inside the house near a door on the opposite side to the approaching flame.  Remaining inside the house means that the body is shielded from radiant heat.
 >   Close all windows and doors and block any other openings and gaps between the doors and floor to prevent smoke and flames from entering the house.
 >   Fill the bath, buckets and water containers and place them around the house ready to use in putting out spot fires.
 >   Soak towels and woollen blankets with water.  Use them to cover your face as protection against smoke inhalation and place them against openings ie.  under doors, etc.
 >   Reduce the fire fuel by keeping grass cut, clearing away fallen leaves and dead undergrowth, tan bark and woodpiles near the house.
 > Clear overhanging trees and shrubs from close to the house.
 > Plant low flammability shrubs away from your home to slow down wind, cut down radiant heat and catch flying embers and sparks from a bushfire.
 > Ensure LPG valves face away from the building.
 > Enclose all eaves, fit wire screens to doors, windows and roof vents.
 >   Make sure you have access to adequate water supplies (such as tank, dam or swimming pool).
